What to do about fear of flying
It is better to acknowledge the problem than trying to hide it.
Actually the first step is to identify and acknowledge the fear. First of all to your self.
Accept your fear.
Decide to do something about it.
Try to prepare for your flight in advance.
Go to the airport and get acquainted with the environment at the airport.
Learn as much as you can about flying.
Figure out what you are afraid of.
Take it in your own pace, but do not wait too long.
Set goals for your flying.
Think about the good things around it.
Practice to breath calmly.
As you get aboard the plane, do this breathing exercise, just like you did at home.
If you feel that this is something that you can not handle yourself, talk to your doctor about it.
Being afraid of flying is sometimes coupled to other mental disorders like depression, bipolar disease, personality disorders or other phobias.
Many women get more afraid of flying as they get children of their own. This is normal and it usually subsides with time, as a majority of all cases do.
I think about a colleague of mine. She sometimes used to say to her worried passengers:
-” I have two little children at home. Do you thing that I would lock myself in to this metal tube at 30 000 feet every day if I thought that was is dangerous?”
All Cabin Crew on every airline in the world knows that some passengers are afraid to fly.
Do not hesitate to tell the Cabin Crew about your fears.
After all, it is not something to be ashamed of.
Good luck!
Do not give up!
